Aeronautics has progressed rapidly over the past years, beginning with the first 12 second flight by the Wright brothers, to mass intercontinental transit today.

At each stage of the development there have been external pressures making designers and engineers produce faster and more economical aircraft — this may be the need for improved manoeuvrability of a fighter, or the need to move greater numbers around the world. The development of gloves has probably not been so fast or dramatic, but it has been impressive. I want to look at the pressures which have helped to shape the products currently available and consider probable future developments.

Examination gloves have traditionally been manufactured from natural rubber latex because the technology is relatively easy and the product is exceptionally soft and comfortable in use. So what are the drivers to seek alternative materials? When AIDS burst on the world the use of latex gloves exploded exponentially — product was unavailable and this encouraged new manufacturers to enter the market. The companies had to develop their skills on dipping gloves; however, they often were not aware of the need to leach excess protein from the glove, or even if they were aware, many did not want to spend the money on hot water to leach the gloves.

This resulted in gloves entering the market which had very high levels of latex protein. This resulted in the sensitisation of many laboratory and health care workers, and in many cases latex allergy which caused them to have an anaphylactic shock.

Individuals once sensitised, who have not reacted to latex protein, will continue to be sensitised on further latex contact. This is a particular problem with powdered latex gloves rarely used in the UK.

However, many companies and institutions have banned the use of latex gloves simply to eliminate any potential problems with previously sensitised individuals. Natural rubber latex gloves have an excellent physical barrier; however, they do not offer great protection against solvents.

Laboratory and industrial customers are demanding greater protection. The material was once collected by low cost labour, which meant the raw material was exceptionally low cost. In the past few years world demand for latex has exploded, at a time when plantations are reaching the end of their productive life, thus pushing prices up exponentially.

This alone has created an enormous demand for latex tyres. India is also developing an automobile industry to meet the growing needs for transportation in the continent. This ever increasing price of latex has caused users to actively seek an alternative material.Contact dermatitis can develop from frequent and repeated use of hand hygiene products, exposure to chemicals, and glove use.

Contact dermatitis is classified as either irritant or allergic. Irritant contact dermatitis is common, nonallergic, and develops as dry, itchy, irritated areas on the skin around the area of contact. Allergic contact dermatitis can result from exposure to accelerators and other chemicals used to manufacture rubber gloves or from exposure to other chemicals found in the dental practice setting.

Allergic contact dermatitis often causes a rash beginning hours after contact and, like irritant dermatitis, is usually confined to the areas of contact.

Latex allergy is a reaction to certain proteins in latex rubber. It usually begins within minutes of exposure but can sometimes occur hours later.

It produces varied symptoms, which commonly include runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, scratchy throat, hives, and itchy burning sensations. However, it can involve more severe symptoms, such as asthma, marked by difficult breathing, coughing spells, and wheezing; cardiovascular and gastrointestinal ailments; and in rare cases, anaphylaxis and death.

DHCP who have contact dermatitis or latex allergy symptoms should see an experienced health care professional e. All patients should be screened for latex allergy e. Patients with a latex allergy should not have direct contact with latex-containing materials and should be treated in a latex-safe environment.

Such patients also may be allergic to the chemicals used in manufacturing natural rubber latex gloves, or to metals, plastics, or other materials used to provide dental care. DHCP should take the following precautions for patients with a possible or documented latex allergy:. American Dental Association. Accessed March 17, Available at: www.

Latex comes from the milky sap of the rubber tree, Hevea Brasiliensis. The sap consists of a polymer cis-1,polyisoprene. Latex contains hundreds of proteins. Some of these protein fractions are responsible for Type I anaphylactic allergic reactions.

These are systemic reactions with symptoms inclusive of, but not limited to, hives, rhinitis, and bronchial constriction. In the process of making latex heat-stable and elastic, latex goes through a process of vulcanization, and chemicals are added to promote strength, stretch and durability.

An additional source of glove allergy may come from the talc or cornstarch powder used in some gloves. Powders can bind with latex protein, which allows the antigen to reach the wearers skin. Additionally, when removing the gloves, this powder can be aerosolized and become a sensitizer via inhalation. Alternative glove potentials include "powder free" or "latex free" gloves. If choosing latex, powder free is preferable with reduced extractable proteins.

If picking synthetic rubber gloves such as neoprene or styrene butadiene, keep in mind that it is still possible to acquire contact dermatitis due to the chemicals used in manufacture.

However, "Type I" natural latex allergy does not occur with synthetic rubber gloves. Non-latex gloves should be used when there is little potential for contact with infectious materials. Hands should be washed before and after glove use. Hand washing is the most important factor regarding infection control.Latex gloves have been in manufacture for over one hundred and twenty years. This manufacture was done largely in Malaysia alone as this was the primary source of the rubber tree.

To protect his nurse's hands he asked the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company if they could make a rubber glove that could cope with being dipped in carbolic acid.

The nurse soon became so adept with using the gloves that others, began following her example and using them too. It wasn't until that the gloves are recorded as being used on a daily basis for medical procedures at Johns Hopkins hospital. The hospital has documentation by surgeons at the time complaining about how difficult it is to get the gloves fully onto their hands!

To solve the problem of donning the hands Lycopodium spores a type of ground moss mixed with talcum powder was used to lubricate the gloves for a few years, but in the s it was found that Lycopodium spores were poisonous to humans and therefore harmful to both the patient and the nurse or doctor wearing them. Cornstarch, which is the powder still used today, was first tried inbut it wasn't used by the majority of manufacturers till approximately There was a stable and steady demand for latex gloves until the early s when the demand increased dramatically.

This noticeable boost in demand was primarily due to the increased awareness of the HIV virus and the risks to medical staff who were concerned that they may catch the disease without adequate protection.

The Development of Nitrile Gloves

So the hospitals began buying greater quantities of latex gloves. This dramatic increase in demand made it possible and necessary for other Asian countries to get involved in the production of latex gloves. At this time there were also concerns about the quality of the gloves as the directives and quality standards that regulate the industry today were simply not in place at that time so gloves were frequently produced with holes and tears.

Soon afterwards the FDA began regulating the production of latex gloves. The term medical-grade means that the glove will act as a consistently protective barricade which, through the fabric, stops the transmission of microorganisms found in blood or other bodily fluids which can infect and cause disease.

Medical Grade Exam Gloves are strictly tested to pass certain requirements in durability, protection and appearance. Gloves that do not meet the grade are described as general purpose gloves which can have many uses in the home and workplaces, particularly in industries such as beauty and food industries. There are many concerns about latex gloves because of the increasing amount of people that are becoming allergic to latex, so Nitrile or other latex-free gloves are becoming increasingly popular.

However latex gloves are still deemed the most popular medical exam grade gloves due to their durability, comfort and way they fit to the hand. Have a question? Call Us! Helpful Links. Retail food safety: nonlatex gloves. Existing law, the California Retail Food Code, establishes uniform health and sanitation standards for retail food facilities and delegates the enforcement of those standards to the State Department of Public Health and local health agencies.

Existing law requires that food employees minimize bare hand and arm contact with nonprepackaged food that is in a ready-to-eat form. Existing law requires food employees to use utensils, including gloves, in certain situations, such as assembling ready-to-eat food. Existing law requires food employees to wear single-use gloves when contacting food and food-contact surfaces under certain conditions, including if an employee has cuts, sores, or rashes.

Latex Glove Issues

This bill would prohibit the use of latex gloves in food facilities and retail food establishments and require food employees to use nonlatex utensils, including nonlatex gloves. The bill would make related findings and declarations.

By revising the standards enforced by local health agencies and changing the scope of an existing crime, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program. The California Constitution requires the state to reimburse local agencies and school districts for certain costs mandated by the state. Statutory provisions establish procedures for making that reimbursement. This bill would provide that with regard to certain mandates no reimbursement is required by this act for a specified reason.

With regard to any other mandates, this bill would provide that, if the Commission on State Mandates determines that the bill contains costs so mandated by the state, reimbursement for those costs shall be made pursuant to the statutory provisions noted above. The people of the State of California do enact as follows:. The Legislature finds and declares all of the following:. Up to 6 percent of people in the United States are estimated to have latex allergies, including up to 17 percent of health care and food service workers, 11 percent of the elderly, up to 73 percent of children with spina bifida, and up to 34 percent of children who have had more than three surgical procedures.

The symptoms of a latex allergy include itching, flushing, hives, rashes, swelling, asthma symptoms such as choking, shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing, gastrointestinal reactions such as severe vomiting and diarrhea, confusion from hypoxia, and life-threatening anaphylactic reactions, which can include severe airway swelling, respiratory failure, a severe decline in blood pressure, and potentially death if not treated immediately.

There is no cure for a latex allergy.

Latex Glove Issues

Once a latex allergy develops, subsequent exposures to latex often dramatically increase the severity of, and result in smaller amounts of latex inducing, an allergic reaction. Those who suffer from latex allergies may suffer from cross-reactive food allergies or asthma.

Latex allergy is often a progressive allergy for which there is no cure. Health care expenditures for treating accidental latex exposures are high due to the emergency resuscitative care that is required.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommend the use of nonlatex gloves for activities that are not likely to involve contact with infectious materials, such as food preparation.Slideshare uses cookies to improve functionality and performance, and to provide you with relevant advertising.
