Conceptual Model – The Critical Part of Web Application Design
I studied painting until I fell out with the abstract expressionists and switched to photography. But I can draw. What I cannot do is diagram. I always wanted to. I have models in my head all the time of how things work. I find myself resorting to pre-existing models like four-squares or the Sierpinski triangle I dig fractals. For example:. Other than the oh-god-my-eyes color choices, my social architecture diagram has deeper problems. I was sacrificing accuracy for consistency.
A concept model is a visual representation of a set of ideas that clarifies the concept for both the thinker and the audience. It is a useful and powerful tool for user experience designers but also for business, engineering, and marketing… basically anyone who needs to communicate complexity.
Which is most of us, these days. Both of these models encapsulate the ideas they hold in such a memorable way that they launched movements. If you wish to clearly present a set of ideas to an audience and represent how they fit together, a diagram is much more powerful than words alone.
Dan Roam points this out in his latest book, Blah Blah Blah :. Concept models can serve many purposes. You can use concept models to show your teammates how a complex website is organized before the site is built….
I teach user experience design, and my syllabus always includes concept models. Students of mine who do a concept model before working on the interaction design and information architecture always make better and more coherent products. The act of ordering information forces them to think through how all the disparate elements of a product fit together. But mostly in hopes of learning a way to make a good concept model.
The workshop was brain-candy and eye-opening: They covered how the brain processes information and how ways of interacting with information can promote understanding. At lunch, Stephen was manning the room while Karl grabbed food for them. I had been struggling with a model for negotiation I wanted for a talk I was presenting later in the program. Seeing Stephen idle, I pounced and begged for help. These two models run through all resolutions of design — everything from developing a product system to crafting a single button.
Understanding how they work together will help you design products that users can easily understand. Understanding and designing for a mental model involves uncovering a deeper understanding of the motivations, thought processes, and emotional state of your users — independent of your product. For example:. Identifying these at the start of your project will increase your chances of designing an easy to use and successful product.
The best way to do this is through common design research methods such as task analysis, observation and interviews. A conceptual model is created by the designer as a high-level plan for how the product will work and fit together. Elements that contribute to the conceptual model of your product include:. You must validate and iterate on the elements of your conceptual model through testing directly with customers. The best way to do this is through card sorting, tree testing, concept testing, and usability testing.
Ultimately leading to product abandonment. Consider these worst-case scenarios:. How might you help the user model that idea mentally? Too much innovation is traumatic, and will lead to revolt…respect the old way of doing things. If change is necessary, make it feel like a gentle improvement on the past. Hey thanks for reading! Understanding mental and conceptual models in product design
Sign in.This article explains the Conceptual Frameworkalso called a Conceptual Model in a practical way. After reading you will understand the basics of this powerful problem solving and analytic tool. A Conceptual framework is a visual representation that helps to illustrate the expected relationship between cause and effect in a financial context. It is also called a Conceptual Model or research model. Different variables and the assumed relationships between those variables are included in the model and reflect the expectations.
A Conceptual Framework is a tool that is used before to a study. This makes a Conceptual Framework an analytical tool. It is used to make conceptual distinctions and bring together different ideas.
Strong Conceptual Frameworks lead to actual realisation of the intended objective. A Conceptual Framework originates in the financial reporting of accountancy.
This is a default setting for practical problems to be tested objectively. In a Conceptual Model, the relationships are clearly defined between the different variables and their relationship to each other. Typically, the model is prepared before actual research takes place.
In addition, the type of research determines whether it is wise and useful to work with a Conceptual Framework. In testing research, the use of a Conceptual Framework is customary. Based on hypotheses, a certain idea can be shown. The basis of testing research is to demonstrate the cause-effect relationship, which is also reflected in the Conceptual Framework. In testing research, one works with specific expectations about cause and effect relationships, which are displayed in the schematic model.
Nevertheless, the model is also suitable for exploratory research. This often consists of broadly defined concepts instead of specifically defined variables. In this type of research, the specific relationships are identified afterwards and the variables are directly measurable and formulated fairly concretely.
In order to demonstrate the cause and effect relationship well, it is important to first chart the expectations within the Conceptual Framework and to divide the cause-effect relationship into variables.
In this context, the variables are the characteristics that summarise the cause-and-effect relationship. Suppose it is important for a fashion chain to run more sales through their online shop.
The latter dependent variable result is determined by the independent variables causes. The characteristics can influence each other and be directly related to each other. The only discussion that can arise is which unit can best be chosen to measure the variables. To overcome this, it is suggested to make good and clear agreements in advance.
It also looks pretty simple. Once the independent and dependent variables have been determined, a Conceptual Framework can be started:. Working with a Conceptual Model has various advantages.
In addition, the guidelines help you to reach a final result. The standards that are determined in advance will be consistent with this framework, so that everyone who has the variables knows exactly what is expected.
What do you think? Are you using a Conceptual Framework in research or problem solving? You have an idea of how it should work in the real world. You just need to communicate it to the rest of the design team. Welcome to the world of what we call Conceptual Models. In this article, we will explain what Conceptual Models are and how to use them.
Conceptual Model Examples
A conceptual model is a representation of a system. It shows how people, places, and things interact. They show the real-world features and interactions of your design idea. In other words, a conceptual model is an abstraction of a piece of the real world or a design you plan to bring into the real world.
When you pull up Google maps on your mobile phone or another device, you will see a representation of the roads, bridges, intersections, restaurants, fueling stations, retail stores, and points of interest. These facilities appear on the map as sketches of buildings with labeled markers showing their location. Take an orbital model of the solar system. It has spheres that represent the Sun and planets. That is, you can create them with a sophisticated design program or draw them on a piece of paper.
Conceptual modeling entities are the symbols of real-world objects in a system. It has arrows to show the direction of traffic flow in the real world. In the case of the planetarium, we have spheres that represent the sun and planets. The entity that signifies the sun is at the center of the model. The second-largest entity is farther out and symbolizes Jupiter. And so on with the other planets. The relationship is the verb. The entities are the subject and object.
Constraints govern entity relationships within a conceptual model. You may recall that there are entity classes and instances. One instance might interact with a whole class. A class may interact with other classes. Or an instance may interact with only one other instance. A class might not interact with any other classes. Some possible constraints are:. Some of the constraints might look like this:.Before you understand what a Conceptual Model is, you need to understand what a Mental Model is.
A Mental Model is nothing but a model that you will build into your mind about how a particular thing will look, feel and work. Suppose I tell you that I am going to show my new web application that will let you to schedule appointments with your clients. I am sure you would have thought about a Calendar, Contact list, creating an appointment, you getting reminders about an appointment etc. When I sit down to design this web application, I will have to design it keeping in mind the model you my user will build in your mind.
That means, I will have to ensure that my design of the web application should have concepts like managing a Calendar, Contact List, Appointment, Reminder etc. This design model that I will build to communicate the design of my web application with everyone is called the Conceptual Model. The Conceptual Model will abstractly explain the function of the web application and what concepts you should be aware of to use the web application. If my Conceptual Model is very near to your Mental Model, you will find it easy to learn and use my web application.
NOTE: I am discussing Conceptual Model from the perspective of designing a web application but all of this can also be applied to any software application like a desktop or a mobile application. This free course will teach you how to design easy-to-use web applications in 5 simple steps. Click here to get started.
I know you would be trying to correlate the Conceptual Model with the design of the User Interface. You should be designing the Conceptual Model right at the start of the design cycle.
Even before you have drawn a single of the User Interface. Conceptual Model will not talk about the User Interface of the web application. It will only talk about the concepts within the web application and the relationships between those concepts. For example, the Appointment Scheduling web application will have concepts like maintaining Calendars, maintaining Appointments, receiving Reminders etc.
Now that you understand why you should design the Conceptual Model, let us discuss how you can design the Conceptual Model.
You should always try to have concepts in your web application that the user is familiar with. This will cut down the learning curve and make your web application easy to use. However it is not always possible to have the same concepts in the web application as what the user is aware of. You will eventually want to build foreign concepts into the web application. For example, you can introduce the concept of creating Tags on the Appointments so that the user can classify the appointments as Personal, Professional, Customer appointments etc.
The concept of tagging the appointments is a foreign concept to the traditional way of creating appointments. Keep in mind that if you keep on adding more foreign concepts into your design, the user will have to learn that much more and it will make your web application complex and difficult to use.
But in contrast to this, if the concepts are not foreign, then you can add as many as you need. Its true that the web application will still become complex and difficult to use but since the user is not foreign to these concepts when he starts out using the web application, his Mental Model would have already taken those concepts into account.
So the learning curve will not be too steep. Ultimately what concepts to have and what not to have in the web application comes down to defining the scope of the application. You should always keep the Conceptual Model focused on the tasks the users will carry out in the web application. Those tasks should use the concepts that are familiar to the user.
You should avoid having foreign concepts into the tasks as much as possible. Only add the foreign concepts when they add value to the user. In case of the Appointment Scheduling application, the task of creating an appointment will involve concepts of maintaining the Calendars and Appointments.
These are concepts the user is familiar with. But the concept of tagging the Appointments is foreign and should be avoided.Nordic Visitor was even better than we anticipated.
It is refreshing to work with a company that puts its customers first and goes out of their way to make sure their experience is all positive. This was the first time we have used a tour company and our experience was absolutely amazing. We had an itinerary loaded with hotel changes and activities and Silja somehow arranged everything perfectly. She even recommended a great restaurant for our wedding anniversary, which we were fortunate to celebrate in Iceland.
I cannot recommend Nordic Traveler enough. We couldn't have asked for a better organized self drive tour. Fully detailed, easily understood, and very clearly written. It left us feeling confident and happy to be able to relax knowing it was so well organized. Loved every minute of our time in Scotland. We had no problems. We would definitely recommend them to any one going and wouldn't use another company ourselves to book a vacation with. I have already recommended Nordic Visitor to many friends who are interested.
Thank you for the chance to visit your country. I have now been to thirty countries and rate this experience at the top. What impressed me also were the number of young people, drivers, waiters, hotel staff, who were so excited to meet and show their country.
The most impressive part of this trip was Iceland and her greatest aspect, her people. I look forward to returning. Very pleased and a big thank you to Sofia in her prompt responses to our initial queries. We are truly satisfied customers Special thanks to Audur.
She was very helpful and generally prompt in responding to email inquires. I was amazed at how extensive, comprehensive and helpful all of the written materials were to a successful trip.
All of the accommodations were very good. I booked my trip through Nordic Visitor based on reviews on the web. So I wasn't sure how it will turn out. But your team knocked it out of the park. Your service and attention to detail was remarkable. It was a wonderful experience, can't really say enough. Everything was much better than I had expected.
Every aspect of the trip worked out very smoothly. This was my first visit to Norway and I relied entirely on Nordic Visitor to help me figure out an itinerary and to book transport and hotels. I was very pleased with every aspect of the trip and I would be happy to use Nordic Visitor again.
